This collection consists of 196 items pertaining to building and maintaining a bridge that would span the Kentucky River in Frankfort. The bulk of the collection is receipts for work, materials, and shares in the Frankfort Bridge Company. Billing invoices are included with the receipts. There is an authorization document, in the collection, for someone to draw the dividend of another shareholder. The collection also contains a contract for bridge repair, and a land title for the property the bridge was built on. Other items include: dividend payments, hiring a lawyer for the company, town tax payments, and shares of the company bought by citizens. The Frankfort Bridge Company was originally formed in 1799, to build a span across the Kentucky River in Frankfort. The initial effort to span the river failed and the legislature repealed the charter. They in turn awarded it to John Pope with authorization to fix a toll for crossing. This bridge effort also failed. In 1810, the legislature incorporated a new company, which had the power to sell stock to raise money for a bridge at the end of St. Clair Street.
